Although I did recently find a drugstore dupe for my beloved Chanel, I have to say I really didn’t think the Better than Sex Mascara could possibly be anywhere near as good as the Chanel Inimitable Intense. I have just enjoyed using it for so long and been getting amazing results from it. But since I had seen such good reviews about the Better than Sex Mascara, I figured it was definitely worth it to try it out.
For the purposes of this experiment, I applied the Chanel to one eye and the BTS to the other. I can’t wait to see if you notice a difference.

On the left, you see Chanel Inimitable Intense. One of the things I love most about this mascara is the brush! Its slim with short bristles, so it is super easy to apply in a hurry. I don’t have to worry about having a fat brush hit my skin or under my bottom lashes. Plus, the design of the brush really makes it simple to get into small places and hit those bitty inner lashes. Chanel claims that this mascara will:
- produce volume, separation, and curl.
- deliver dramatic length.
- separate lashes without clumping, flaking, or smudging.
On the right, you see the Too Faced Better than Sex. I love the pink packaging! But do you see the difference in the brush? Its longer, more numerous bristles are in the formation of an hourglass. The company claims that BTS will:
- produce dramatic volume, as well as separation and curl.
- lengthen.
- lock lashes in place with the deepest black possible.
Which set of lashes in the above image do you think is coated with Better than Sex?

I tried out the BTS Mascara for a couple of days after I received it. I have always felt that mascaras take a few uses to “break in.” So far, I really don’t have any complaints. Even though I was a little weary of the fatter brush, I was able to apply it easily and smoothly without clumping. But I will say that for days that I am in an extreme hurry, I will be reaching for the Chanel! I just feel like with its slim brush, there is less chance of getting a gob of mascara where it doesn’t belong.
Sooo… which set of lashes has which mascara?
I really had to stare at myself in the mirror and at my photos to figure out which mascara, if any, looked better.
The verdict: Chanel Inimitable Intense looks just a smidgen smoother than the Too Faced Better than Sex, but using each mascara resulted in longer, fuller, curled lashes. Check out some before and after photos:

Reminder: BTS is on your left, Chanel is on your right.

Do you see how difficult it was for me to make a decision?

I spent roughly the same amount of time applying each mascara, and they each yielded similar results- I love the way my lashes look! They each kept their promise of providing volume, length, and curl, but Chanel’s brush allowed for more separation.
If Chanel Inimitable Intense were to be discontinued tomorrow, I would definitely hop on the Too Faced train.
What is your ultimate mascara? Let me know! I don’t want to be missing out on a great thing!
That’s what’s up in the mascara world. I hope you enjoyed the post!

I know! That’s true, but it is really close to my holy grail mascara, so maybe it is that good??
i have never tried the channel one but i love the too faced better than sex mascara. the only issue that i have with it is that the tube dried out so fast 🙁
i love the idea of this post! Nice collab 🙂
Ooh! See I wouldn’t know if it dried out quickly since I have only had it a week. The Chanel lasts a good three months. Xo
Aww! It’s working so far for me. I generally don’t go for the fatter brushes, but it seems good. And like I said, I still love the Chanel!
I had to read this because I love the Too Faced mascara, but that’s probably because I prefer fatter brushes. They seem to get a better grip on my lashes. Bare Escentuals Buxom Lash is my go-to but I’ll definitely give the Chanel a try!
Thanks for reading, Lauren! If I remember correctly, you have beautiful eyelashes! I’ll have to check out the Buxom Lash. I haven’t heard much about it at all! I don’t even remember how I got hooked on Chanel, but I can bet it was because of a free sample way back when. Xo
Hey! I’ll check it out!
Thanks!
Woah!! I literally cannot even tell the difference. Which is crazy because like you said the brushes are completely different from one another! I must ask though, how many layers of each did you use? I guess for BTS its obviously like 1-3 on how dramatic you want your lashes to be….do you think thats the same for the Chanel one too?
I’m a BTS user (although, I didn’t even know that Chanel one existed) and I find myself for work doing 2 layers, if I go out and about 3 layers but now after seeing this I feel like Chanel might be a little bit better for when I’m waking up early and rushing to get to work where as with BTS it does take some precision to separate a little more. Such a clever post Jackie, love it!
xo, JJ
Jenny!! You know I have been thinking I need I edit the post to clarify that I only used one coat of each!!! I mean, several sweeps, but one coat. Does that make sense?? I really do love the Chanel, but the BTS is great too. I’m wearing it today. It’s just a little harder for me to apply because of the large brush. You’ve got to try the Chanel. You can get it at Nordstrom!!
Thank you! It is a nice mascara. I just don’t know if it is the best of all time.
Thanks!! I need to try those out! I have some lipsticks from The Balm, and I love them. I know of IT, but I haven’t tried any of their products. I’ll have to change that!
Thank you! I promise you won’t be disappointed. It’s amazing!
Thank you so much!! I like it, too, but I really love the Chanel. You can’t go wrong!
Thanks! You know, I have that problem a lot, too. I usually put a setting powder over my under eye concealer to reduce moisture, but even with that, I still get smudges sometimes. I will say that the smudging is a less with the Chanel than the BTS.
Loved this post! Both mascaras look amazing 🙂
Just came across this post – thank you! Question…do either of these remove with warm water? that’s a must for me!
Hi, Amy! Hmm. I usually remove my mascara with micellar cleansing water. Also, out of these two, the Chanel is easier to remove!
