The Best Clothes to Wear in Fall: Fall Outfit Ideas
This post is all about the best clothes to wear in fall. Transitioning your wardrobe from summer to fall may seem like an extreme task. Summer clothes and fall clothes have very different colors, textures, and materials. After reading this post, you will know exactly which clothes are best to wear in autumn and have tons of fall outfit ideas!

While I love the fun of summer and everything that comes with it (days at the pool, beach trips, bright colors, longer nights, sundresses and shorts), I get so excited when fall arrives!
I can’t really put my finger on why I love fall clothes (and fall) so much. Actually, I am often way too eager to wear fall clothes before the temperatures even drop enough for a light jacket to be appropriate.
And if you’re like me, this puts you in a tough position, because it’s really warm until about mid-October, but you really want to wear all the fall things right after Labor Day. So I’m here to answer this question: What clothes do you wear in the fall? Get ready to be inspired!
Fall Outfit Ideas
1. Wear a sweater over a summer dress or with a breezy skirt.
Don’t give up your summer dresses just yet! They make for very stylish an interesting fall outfits. Grab a textured sweater in the same color family, and toss it on over a breezy summer frock. Use a chic belt to cinch your waist and maintain your figure.
Wondering what kinds of shoes to wear with an outfit like this? You can still wear your open-toed favorites, or opt for Converse or boots instead.

2. Make your outerwear a key part of your outfit.
Have you ever grabbed a jacket on your way out the door only to find that it does not complement your outfit at all? To avoid this awkward scenario, work your outerwear into your outfit for a cohesive look!
This takes a little bit of planning, but if you anticipate that you will need a jacket, make the jacket the focal point of your autumn outfit. For example, if you want to wear that beautiful light trench jacket that’s been waiting in the wings of your closet, wear a simple pair of jeans and a white tank as the base.
And again, it depends on the weather where you live, but don’t be afraid to wear your favorite sandals with this look!

3. Wear tall boots with sweater dresses and skirts.
Nothing says fall quite like a riding boot. If you are stumped on how to dress in fall, you must have a pair of tall boots on hand!
I’ve had these Sam Edelman Penny Boots for years. They really do come in handy! I didn’t wear them much last year because skinny jeans had hit the back burner, but you really can wear them with so many more items than just skinny jeans!

So grab a cozy knee-length sweater dress or a fall floral skirt or dress to go with your tall boots. Wear these outfits before it becomes too cold to have any part of your legs exposed. Those autumn breezes can hit different!

4. Try thin layers.
You don’t need to pile chunky cardigan over a long sleeve turtleneck just yet. Where I’m from on the east coast, I’d sweat to death any time before December 1. But if you still love layers (I mean, they are the epitome of fall, aren’t they?!), don’t fret!
Layer an oversized button-down shirt over a textured short sleeve sweater or knit cami. If you add some boots or autumn aesthetic sneakers, you will feel like fall without being overheated.

5. Opt for an easy matching set.
My inventory of matching sets has grown in recent years. If you find the right sets, getting dressed is chic and effortless!
From blazer/trouser duos to sweatsuits to mixed media sets, there is a matching set for almost any occasion!

6. Wear autumn colors and fall hues.
This style tip may seem like common knowledge, but it’s really important. I think one of the things I actually love most about fall clothes is all the earthy colors!
Here are some examples of autumn hues that make for some very aesthetic fall clothes:
- burnt orange
- taupe
- wine
- rich cream
- mustard
- hunter green
- navy

You don’t need to go overboard, though. Stick to just one or two autumn colors per outfit to avoid looking like walking fall foliage.
And while a lot of the clothes I’ve already linked in this post have fall colors, here are a few more ideas!
