How to Style Different Types of Jeans for Fall: The Casual Edit
It’s my favorite time of year! As the trees change their outfits, so do I! My wardrobe just loves autumn, but I’m not sure my bank account does. Ha!
I always feel inspired by the fresh, crisp fall air and the warm colors of the changing leaves. It’s the perfect time to play around with different clothing textures, layers, and accessories, as the outdoor temperature is very kind this time of year. Plus, I always sort through my denim inventory in the fall, so I wanted to show you how to style different types of jeans.
I’ve styled 4 of my favorite types of high-waisted jeans (In my opinion, high-waisted jeans are the most flattering on my body type.):
- demi bootcut jeans
- cropped wide leg jeans
- skinny jeans
- flare jeans
🚨Major fall outfit inspiration ahead!
Demi Bootcut Jeans + Textured Cardigan and Hiking Boots

If you haven’t ventured into the demi bootcut jean world, yet, you should! And here’s why: They are unique because they have a vintage look, and they pair well with almost any type of shoes!
Since it is fall, I chose to style my demi bootcut jeans with my favorite hiking boots! I’m a huge boot and booties fan, but you could pair your cropped jeans with chic pointy flats, heels, mules, wedges, etc.
Doesn’t my cream cable knit cardigan just scream fall?! I bought it at one of the Nordstrom sales this year, and it’s just perfect for layering over tees and camis. Plus, the mid-length is perfect for the high-waisted, cropped jeans! And it’s totally timeless, which means it can be a part of a fall capsule wardrobe!
A hat has the power to seriously elevate any look. I’m so absolutely in love with felt panama hats for fall! This one has a leopard belt buckle detail, but it comes in countless other colors and combinations!

cropped wide leg jeans + combat boots

I have to admit, I went back and forth many times before I went ahead and added these white combat boots to my cart. They are a little edgier than I am used to, but I’m so proud that I was brave enough to buy! The boots are so unique and make me feel like a style boss. (Plus, they are under $40!!)
I layered long wool socks under them to embrace the edginess, and I’m loving how they complement my wide leg cropped jeans for fall!
Since the boots pretty much steal the show here, I kept the rest of the outfit pretty quiet, topping off the look with a rust-colored crewneck sweater and a headband. Similar to hats, headbands are stellar at taking looks from mediocre to voguish!

high-waisted skinny jeans + color block cardigan and riding boots

If you don’t already have a leopard cami in your wardrobe, you need to grab one! It is one of the most useful and versatile pieces you will have in your wardrobe! Leopard print really is the best neutral, as long as you find a print with a beige or tan base.
Do you see how easy it was to layer my leopard cami under a color block cardigan? And camisoles are PERFECT for tucking into skinny jeans. If you utilize this style tip, you will instantly flatter your figure. Don’t believe me? Try it!!
Lastly, riding boots were MADE for skinny jeans. I’ve had these Sam Edelman boots for a few years, and they are hands-down my favorite boots ever. They are super comfortable, and that is a declaration I don’t make too often, because I have problem feet!

Flare jeans + denim jacket

Since I spent my pre-teen and most of my teen years in the 1990s, I have a soft spot for 90s style. I LIVED in bellbottom Mud Jeans in junior high!
I snagged these Hudson flares last winter, and they make me feel so young when I wear them! Of course you can style them more traditionally (i.e. with a pullover sweater or button-down shirt), but I think it’s fun to time-travel a bit by topping them with a denim jacket (of the same wash)!
Flares look best with flats (sneakers or non-sneakers) or booties with a wedge or block heel. I chose to pair my flares jeans with white New Balance sneakers. Then, I sweetened the look a bit with a peplum tank.
