Guilty pleasures often get us through the dreariest of days and even the best of days. They give us something to look forward to! Most of the time, the littlest things make the biggest positive impact on our moods. No need to go on a massive shopping spree! (Although those are fun while they are happening, you risk feeling extensive guilt just hours later thinking of how you just threw a gut punch at your bank account, leaving it heavily bruised. Cue the anxiety!) Here are my top 7 guilty pleasures. What are yours?
I don’t bother with the TV, music, or my phone during lunch. It’s just my food, my latest copy of Us Weekly, and me. Why? I’ve got two main reasons: You can’t argue that it is not interesting to read about people you will never know or meet. Celebrities almost seem like royalty. (Brad and Angelina… I cannot wait to get next week’s issue! See why this is one of my guilty pleasures?) It’s fun to peek into their lives and be entertained by their never-ending sagas. The second reason I reach for the tabloids is that it gives me something to look forward to during my whirlwind mornings taking care of my kids. Once I put them down for a nap, I dash for the fridge and my magazine for some mindless, quiet time. I know all or most of you are not stay-at-home moms, but I am sure you seek some quiet time at some point during your day or need to take your mind off of your own responsibilities for a few moments. For me, this is the perfect way.
Having my nails look on point makes me feel on point. I try to get my hands and feet done every 2 weeks, otherwise, I feel like I am falling apart. I know I am not the only one who loves to do this because those salons are always overflowing with people! What is it really about having your nails done?? I guess it’s fun to choose a color, and the massage chairs are an added bonus. I get to bid adieu to unwelcome ragged cuticles for a short time, and it’s just plain fun to do something girly. This is on my list of guilty pleasures because it can be expensive and arguably unnecessary. (But oh so necessary!)
I could literally spend an entire day searching for pins and pinning things I know I will never be able to duplicate. I think just seeing these perfect images of decor, outfits, food, fitness…It gives me excitement and new life. For example, I can never wait to try the new recipes I’ve pinned or decorate my entryway to match some gorgeous photo. Again, it gives me something to look forward to, just like I look forward to my serene tabloid lunch. The inspiration is endless on Pinterest, and if I really just need a laugh, those “some ecards” are nothing short of hilarious. Sarcasm is healing, folks. While searching for the perfect (appropriate) one to share with you, I giggled as I scrolled. But why is this on my list of guilty pleasures? I feel like it can turn into a waste of time, albeit a good waste of time. Nailed it!
Since I don’t eat dinner until around 9 p.m. these days, it has become a ritual to include wine. Cabernet Sauvignon to be exact. Enjoying a glass or two signifies that my work for the day is done and relaxes me. Plus, it has antioxidants, and some studies say that drinking one glass of red wine is the equivalent of exercising at the gym for one hour. Don’t believe me? Google it, or read this article. I guess it technically shouldn’t be on my list of “guilty” pleasures!
This ties back to number 1. I’ve been hooked on reality TV ever since The Real World on MTV, because it is exciting to watch other peoples’ “real lives” and see that they experience life situations and emotions like just like the everyday girl or guy. Here are my top reality shows:
The Hills/Laguna Beach
Anything from the Bachelor franchise
The Millionaire Matchmaker
Teen Mom 2/Teen Mom OG = my extreme guilty pleasure
Any boy band music from the 90s takes me back to simpler times. While adulthood is amazing, it is also exhausting. Who doesn’t want to go back to their teenage years sometimes? (If you are still in your teens, enjoy it!!) And here is a secret: I still have MMMBop by Hanson on my “favorites” playlist. It’s so fun to sing along to., so I blast it in my car. Don’t judge me!
The hot, fresh fries. The McNuggets. The Egg McMuffin. The drive-thru feature. It allows me to indulge without much effort. I don’t even need to get out of the car! This is a once-a-week occurrence, and I am not ashamed. Comfort food is comforting! And there is something about the Diet Coke from McDonald’s…the taste and carbonation are perfectly formulated.
We all need something to look forward to on the best of days and the worst of days, and we all need to relax. Most of these guilty pleasures don’t cost much money at all, and I have a feeling that no one’s do! That’s whats up in lifestyle today. What is your favorite guilty pleasure? Leave a comment below! I would love to add to my list.
